GULF WAR (1990 – 1991)

IN 1990 IRAQ INVADED THE SMALL COUNTRY OF KUWAIT, WHICH IS RICH IN OIL RESERVES. THE UNITED NATIONS LEAD BY THE U.S.A. CONDEMNED THIS ACT OF AGGRESSION. THE IRAQI WERE ADVISED TO RETURN TO THEIR BORDER OR FACE MILITARY ATTACK BY THE UNITED NATION’S ALLIES, OF WHICH CANADA WAS A MEMBER.

THE WAR BEGAN IN JANUARY 1990 AND SAW OVER 4,500 CANADIAN ARMED FORCES INVOLVED THROUGHOUT THE MILITARY ACTION, WHICH INCLUDED 237 WOMEN . DURING THIS CAMPAIGN CANADA WAS VERY FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE HAD ANYONE KILLED OR WOUNDED. THERE WERE 42 VETERANS FROM THE NORTH BAY AREA WHO SERVED IN THIS THEATRE OF WAR WHICH SAW THE IRAQI ARMED FORCES DRIVEN BACK TO THEIR HOMELAND.
