KOREAN WAR (1950 - 1953) AND PEACEKEEPING (1954 -1955)

THE KOREAN WAR STARTED WHEN NORTH KOREA INVADED SOUTH KOREA ON JUNE 25, 1950, BY CROSSING OVER THE 38TH PARALLEL WHICH WAS THE DEMARCATION LINE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH . THE NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL CALLED FOR ALL MEMBER COUNTRIES TO RENDER ASSISTANCE TO THE UNITED NATIONS TO OBSERVE THE WITHDRAWAL OF NORTH KOREAN FORCES TO THE 38TH PARALLEL. THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY SENT THREE DESTROYERS TO THE WAR ZONE ON JULY 30, 1950. THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE HAD A TRANSPORT SQUADRON AND 22 FIGHTER PILOTS IN SUPPORT ON JULY 25, 1950. CANADA BEGAN RECRUITING AN ARMY SPECIAL FORCE IN BRIGADE STRENGTH AUGUST 08, 1950. AN ADVANCED WATER PARTY OF 350 SOLDIERS ARRIVED IN KOREA ON NOVEMBER 07, 1950. THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY DEPLOYED WITH THE BRITISH 27TH AND 29TH BRIGADES, UNTIL THE 2ND BATTALION PRINCESS PATRICIA CANADIAN LIGHT INFANTRY ARRIVED DECEMBER 18, 1950. CANADA’S FIRST ACTION TOOK PLACE ON FEBRUARY 17, 1951. AN ARMISTICE WAS SIGNED JULY 27, 1953. DURING THE THREE YEAR WAR IN KOREA 26,791 CANADIANS VOLUNTEERED. DURING THE CAMPAIGN 1567 SERVICEMEN WERE WOUNDED AND 516 WERE KILLED IN ACTION. THERE WERE 195 WHO SERVED FROM THE NORTH BAY AREA AND 10 WERE KILLED IN ACTION OR DIED OF THEIR WOUNDS AFTER THE WAR. A FURTHER 7000 SOLDIERS SERVED AS PEACEKEEPERS 1954--1955
